NVC Community Development Toolkit
Wondering where to start to form a local Nonviolent Communication (NVC) community? Learning NVC has often been equated to learning a whole new language, and many benefits can be had from creating some form of learning community. Whether it be a simple practice group, a social network, a volunteer team coordinating a visit from Marshall Rosenberg, or a business coalition of regional NVC trainers, community comes in many forms.

This NVC Community Development Toolkit provides customizable downloads, tips and ideas from people who have successfully formed a local NVC community — whether it be just a practice circle or a formal organization.

Section 1: Determine the type of community you want to create

Click the links below for ideas, tips and downloads related to forming the types of community listed. NOTE: This list is offered ONLY as a set of ideas, and certainly isn’t an exhaustive list of the types of community you can create.

Section 2: Web site development tools

A web site can be a central hub for connecting your NVC community to information, practice groups, NVC-related services, workshops, opportunities to make a donation or purchase NVC learning materials, and to find volunteer opportunities. Thankfully, there are many affordable resources out there to create a web site with little to no technical ability and very little financial investment.

If you DO NOT have access to a professional web site designer or programmer, click through to the links below to create a web site for your NVC organization or training practice:

Section 3: Create methods to regularly communicate with your NVC community
Regardless of the resources you have available, keeping in regular communication with your local NVC community, team or organization can help meet needs for connection, contribution, growth and information. Some groups meet regularly, others host monthly potlucks or events, and still others simply distribute a monthly publication like an e-newsletter.

Determine what strategies you'd like to use to maintain regular communication and connection with your NVC community.

Section 4: Volunteer and staff recruitment tools

The majority of NVC organizations and teams are volunteer-run and led. One of the most common challenges organizations can have is volunteer recruitment and retention. Does your organization struggle with volunteer burnout — where a small number of volunteers bare the burden of the majority of work, while others simply feel like they don’t have a space for contribution? Here are some resources to support life-serving volunteer experiences and more ease in your recruitment efforts.

Step 1: Determine volunteer roles and responsibilities
Volunteers come in many shapes and sizes, with many different levels of commitment and skills to share. Use the links below to identify your team or organization’s volunteer roles and responsibilities before you begin recruiting. Doing so will help ensure a life-serving experience for all involved, and your ability to recruit the most appropriate volunteers:
